Quadra Island Community Tourism Opportunities Program
Cooperative marketing in partnership with Destination BC and local businesses.
"The Community Tourism Opportunities (CTO) is a province-wide program that provides cooperative funding for eligible tourism activities in communities throughout BC. The program is designed to assist communities that are in a position to implement their own tourism building initiatives."
Since 2006 the Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce has been working with Destination BC (formerly Tourism BC), to assess opportinities for potential growth in tourism on Quadra Island. After two years of consultation with the community the Quadra Island Tourism Plan was finalized and work began in 2008 with support from Destination BC to implement marketing initiatives to realize the opportunities that were identified.
The Quadra Island Tourism Plan is comprehensive and includes the following recommendations as Marketing Priorities:
• Increasing shoulder and winter season visitors
• Increasing spending by summer visitors
• Repeat Visitors and Referrals
The consultants worked very closely with businesses and community members and took great effort to ensure that the aims and themes of the tourism plan reflected the needs and desires of the broader community. The plan identified three key themes with strong, existing products and interest to build marketing messages around
• Recreation: Outdoor activities, Marine activities,
• Education: Visit to learn, Wellness programming
• Culture: Arts, History, First Nations heritage
To encapsulate these themes the ‘tag line’ Escape - Discover - Connect has been a common thread through our marketing initiatives. These initiatives have included: developing an extensive web site to profile package getaway vacations, an online media kit, print advertising in local and regional tourism guides, production of a rack card distributed on major BC Ferries routes, a social media campaign, production of a series of video episodes and last year we undertook and Vancouver Island-wide radio campaign.
With financial support from the Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce Quadra Island Tourism is able to access matching funds from Destination BC and the Strathcona Regional District to develop a budget covering several marketing projects each year.
